La Fête Nationale !
Bastille Day is celebrated on the 14th July and is a national bank holiday. Celebrations date back to 1789 when the Bastille prison fell to the revolutionaries marking the beginning of the end of the monarchy.
There are street parties and fireworks up and down the country, in Paris there is a military parade on the Champs Élysées and an enormous French flag (le Drapeau tricolore) is flown on the Arc de Triomphe.
